Ingredients

For the khichdi:

  • ½ cup browntop millet
  • ¼ cup moong dal
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • A pinch of hing
  • 1 tsp ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 green chilli, chopped
  • ¼ cup chopped carrot
  • ¼ cup chopped beans
  • ¼ cup peas
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2½ to 3 cups water

For finishing:

  • 1 tsp ghee
  • Fresh coriander
  • Lemon juice, optional
  • Roasted cumin powder, optional

Method

  1. Wash browntop millet and moong dal properly.
  2. Soak them for some time so they cook evenly and become easier to digest.
  3. Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker or pan.
  4. Add cumin seeds and hing. Let them release their aroma.
  5. Add chopped ginger and green chilli, then sauté for a few seconds.
  6. Add chopped vegetables and cook lightly for a minute.
  7. Add turmeric powder, soaked millet, soaked dal, and salt. Mix well.
  8. Add water and cook until the millet and dal become soft and well blended.
  9. Once cooked, adjust the consistency as per preference.
  10. Finish with ghee, fresh coriander, lemon juice, or roasted cumin powder.
